Although it may sound hard to believe (all of this is backed up by hard research and real-world results in Olympic-caliber athletes), 3 minutes of this particular form of cardiovascular exercise is the equivalent to about 30 minutes of the traditional, "slow and steady" kind.
I hesitated putting this down here for you to see because on first glance most people would dismiss it as being too outlandish. If you do so it would be a HUGE mistake -- please trust me on this. This specialized, but highly targeted for fat loss, cardio involves alternating between high intensity and low intensity intervals. You can do these intervals by running or using a treadmill, stair-stepper or stationary bicycle, etc. The only requirement is the machine you use has to be able to adjust very quickly to your manual changes in its intensity output. In other words, it has to respond within several seconds of your change from a say, level 10 intensity to a 20, or max intensity.

And this is the secret -- ramping up the intensity then down again, up and down, doing this for a specific number of seconds in the high-intensity phase, then "resting" for the prescribed time in the lower-intensity one.
