Ahh...the end of the year. As the holiday banter dies down, and I hear the last clink of champagne glasses, I can't help but reflect on the past year.

'What did I do worthwhile this past year?' 'Did I do everything I could have?' 'What can I do next year to improve my self/finances/love life/work situation/etc.?'

Do you do the same thing?

Most do...it'a a fertile time for New Year's resolutions.

Topping most people's resolutions are how (bad) their bodies look. They want to get in shape and promise themselves they will do it this year. Yet the vast majority of people that start a new diet and exercise program fail.

If this has happened to you in the past here's a sobering thought. Most people don't understand that their outside reflection almost precisely mirrors their inner condition too.

Why is this sobering?

Just take a look at the diseases, deaths, and overweight statistics in this country. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make the connection between how you look, and when and how you'll die.

If you're overweight -- even moderately, you've increased your chances of contracting diseases most think are attributable to old age, but are in fact directly caused by overeating and a lack of exercise.

Do you feel your health declining? Do you know this is a signal from your body that you are slowly dying? Of course we all die, but, having a choice, wouldn't you rather live a robust, invigorated life, full of vim and vigor to the end? Or one riddled with disease?

This choice, of course, is yours.

I created these lessons to help combat the powerful forces within - urging us to eat more and exercise less.

These are urges we can't help...or ignore. Evolution has deemed them necessary for our survival. The key is working with, not fighting tooth and nail against them. This month's lesson 4 shows you one more synergistic way you can work with the inherent strengths you have.

LESSON #4:

WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS, DRAFT A CONTRACT WITH YOURSELF, THEN SIGN AND DATE IT

In order to permanently succeed with your body transformation you must find your 'supreme objective' and make all other elements in your life conform around it. And it’s not enough to just say the reason(s) out loud either, they must be written down.

As a contract between no one else but you and the good lord these words will form a powerful force that will not only propel you forward on the journey you’re about to embark, but keep you glued to the wheel of your ship (your body) through the worst of storms.

I know, this sounds a little corny. In fact, I've had many people tell me they read this technique but never applied it because they thought it was mumbo-jumbo -- feel-good, sound-good instructions without bite. It was only when they finally applied it, after failed attempts at changing their body, did they realize it worked like crazy.

Why does it work? Because it’s one thing to lie to another human, but a far more difficult thing to lie to yourself. What you’ve done by drafting this contract is you created a bonded instrument between your moral and physical self.

BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING it does is remind you, everyday, of your promise. This is why you must place the contract in a conspicuous place where you have to read it. Drafting a contract but not reading it every day is the same as never having drafted it in the first place. The bathroom mirror, or your nightstand (where I kept mine)
are good places.

In 1998 I won a National body transformation contest. While in the headquarters building of the company that sponsored the contest, I was told something that, at first, was a revelation for me. They told me that out of 20,000+ contestants that entered that year, only 7% finished their 12-week program. Most had dropped out by the half way point or way before.

At first this was a surprise to me. I asked myself how could so many people give up and fail to finish? I couldn’t understand nor comprehend it because there wasn’t one moment during my program that I even remotely considered the a possibility of giving up.

But then I remembered the year before. I had entered the previous year's contest and had dropped out too...just like 93% of this years contestants did.

Because I failed the year before I knew I'd be in the same boat again unless I put all the advantages I could on my side. I studied the principles common to successful people. Then I tailored them to maximize success for me. This principle was one of the 20 I came up with.

It would have been impossible for me to improve my body without a good protein powder. I can't emphasize enough how important it really is. Just ask any fit man or woman at your gym if they could have built their body without using a high quality protein powder.
